Big PSU Third Quarter Dooms ‘Cats Against Gorillas

10/21/2006 6:09:00 PM

PITTSBURG, KS – After only trailing #10 Pitt State by 11 points at halftime, the SBU Bearcats could not answer a 21-point PSU third quarter and fell 63-20 to the Gorillas. SBU had a balanced offensive attack on the day with 420 yards total including 205 rushing but gave up 559 to Pittsburg State.

PSU got on top early on their first play with a 61-yard run by Harlon Hill candidate Germaine Race. A pass and three short rushes later and the Gorillas were on top, 7-0. The Bearcats answered back with a long 14-play drive capped off by a 35 yard field goal by senior kicker Ryan Smith. After a PSU three and out, the ensuing punt to the Bearcats was downed at the 1-yard line.

Freshman QB John McCoy would start things off with a 48-yard run to midfield. Nine plays later McCoy would finish off the 99-yard drive with a one-yard touchdown dive, giving the Bearcats their only lead of the day at 10-7. PSU would answer with a 5-yard TD run by Race. SBU would be stopped on a fourth down conversion at midfield and Pitt State would quickly turn that into another score to go up 21-10. SBU's next two possessions would end with interceptions, the second of which PSU would convert into a 30-yard touchdown pass from Geno Waters to Brian Pray.

An PSU unsportsmanlike conduct penalty and kickoff out-of-bounds gave the Bearcats the ball at the 50-yard line. With just 49 seconds left in the half, McCoy would complete passes to Robert Woodson, Jamar Tucker and finally to Durrell Pride for a 29-yard touchdown. Pride's catch came with only five seconds to go in the first half, pulling the 'Cats to within 11 points at halftime.

Two long runs by PSU's Race pushed their lead to 35-17. The Gorillas would score twice more in the third quarter and again in the fourth before Ryan Smith would hit his second field goal, this time from 34 yards. PSU would add another touchdown late in the fourth quarter.

John McCoy saw the majority of snaps at QB and completed 16 of 32 passes for 185 yards but threw three interceptions. Robert Clardy was 6 of 10 for 30 yards passing. Moine Nicholson carried 15 times for 67 yards while McCoy also rushed for 59 yards on seven carries. Robert Woodson (78 yards) and Durrell Pride (59 yards) had seven catches each with Pride catching the TD pass right before halftime. SBU lost receiver Nick Smart to injury in the first half, after a big collision hit. Robert Barrow led the Bearcats with 10 tackles including three for a loss. Jarred Schumpert had seven stops while Dontrallius Burrows notched six on the day. Pitt State's Germaine Race would rush for 245 yards and three touchdowns on 21 carries.

SBU returns home next weekend for their contest against Missouri Western. The game with the #16 Griffons kicks off at 1:30 p.m. at Plaster Stadium and will be Family & Parents Day.
