BOLIVAR, Mo. --
SBU Bearcat basketball head coach Jeff Guiot has announced the addition of Tre Smith, a transfer from the University of Utah. Smith, a 5-10 guard from Magna, Utah, played in nine games for the Division I Utes in 2009-10 and averaged 1.3 points while playing five minutes per game.

Smith redshirted for the Utes in 2008-09 and played in nine games as a freshman at Utah. He attended Cyprus High School where he led his team in assists for three straight seasons and was basketball team MVP as a senior. He is the son of Earl Smith and Clearisa Clifton.

"Tre has been in an outstanding program for three years," said Guiot. "He is a pass first-type player who sees the floor well and brings leadership, speed and quickness. He'll be great for the locker room and practice. Tre does stuff the right way. He was a walk-on initially for the Utes and later became a team captain."

"Coach (Stan) Johnson, who knows our program, thought Tre would be a great fit," Guiot added. Johnson was an assistant under Guiot for the Bearcats for three seasons and is now an assistant coach for the Utes for head coach Jim Boylen.

Smith was a redshirt for the Utes in November 2008 when the SBU Bearcats defeated Utah, 80-79, in Salt Lake City.

Last year, the Bearcats finished at 20-11, their third straight 20-win season.
