EDMOND, Okla. -- The SBU Bearcat golf team started strong but later struggled Tuesday in the final round of the Central Oklahoma/KickingBird Classic. The Bearcats finished Monday's first round tied for fourth with a 288 team score, but slipped to a 299 and 315 in the tourney's final two rounds, amid 30 mph wind gusts, and finished in 14th place.
Bryan Steele recorded the top finish for the Bearcats, finishing tied for 29th with a three-round total of 222 (70-72-80). Brad Nipper was right behind, tying for 33rd at 223 (69-78-76). Justin Sellin tied for 57th at 228 (73-76-79) while Matt Buschmann tied for 82nd at 232 (76-73-83). Josh Bronn recorded a 241 (79-82-80).
Abilene Christian won the event with a three-round score of 847. Cameron took second and the host UCO Bronchos took third. The MIAA was also represented by Washburn in 10th, Missouri Southern in 13th and Missouri Western in 16th. Jason Timmis of Cameron was the medalist with a 205 (69-66-70).
The Bearcats will next compete at the Missouri Southern Spring Invitational on Monday and Tuesday, April 12-13 in Joplin at Twin Hills Country Club. That event is the final tuneup prior to the MIAA Golf Championships in Kansas City on April 19 and 20.
