BOLIVAR, Mo. -- Sophomore
Joseph Prophet led the Bearcats with a team-high 18 points, as SBU shot 55.6% from the field in a 108-82 win over the Central Bible College Spartans. Prophet missed just two shots all night, going 7-for-9 including a trio of three-pointers.
The Bearcat defense played a big part in the win, forcing 26 Spartan turnovers that translated into 40 points for SBU. Junior
Ryan Dougherty led the team with four steals, to go along with 10 points, in his fourth game this season with double-figures. Doughery's performance on the defensive end also marks his second straight game with four steals.
"We're making strides," said head coach Jeff Guiot after his team's second win in three days. "The bench played better, the free throw shooting was better; We've got kids who can shoot free throws well, it's the leads of my worries." SBU shot 85.7% (12-14) from the charity stripe, a vast improvement from last weekend's 27.3% (3-11) showing in the win over Drury.
Prophet, a sophomore from St. Louis, Mo., raised his scoring average by 3.5 points, from 0.5 per game, to 4.0, with his 18-point performance. "It's nice to see Joe come around," said Guiot. Prophet's point total matches Dougherty's 18 points against Drury, and is the most since
Kurt Koenig put up 26 against St. Mary's (Texas).
Central Bible College briefly held a two-point lead early in the first half, when Caleb Willis' three put the Spartans ahead 6-4. On the next possession,
Tomas Brock was fouled while shooting a three-pointer, and hit all three free throws to give SBU a 7-6 advantage, one they would hold for the remainder of the game. "It's nice to play local teams. Coach [Kirk] Hanson has a first-class team program," said Guiot.
Six Bearcats finished in double figures, with Prophet leading the way, followed by
Tremaine Hill's 16 points off 6-for-8 shooting. Hill surpasses his previous career high, when he scored 10 points against CBC a year ago. Brock and Koenig each finished with 11, while Dougherty and
Nick James each had 10. Hill lead the Bearcats with six rebounds, while Brock posted a team-high five assists.
SBU improves to 2-3 with the win, and will host St. Mary's (Kan.) on Wednesday, November 24th, at 7:00 p.m., to end the non-conference schedule. Conference play kicks off November 30th, when Central Missouri comes to Bolivar for a men's and women's doubleheader, starting at 5:30 p.m.
