SBU men's basketball falls to St. Mary's

Senior forward Kurt Koenig scored a game-high 26 points, but the Bearcats were out-rebounded 42-26, as they fell to the St. Mary's (Texas) Rattlers in the final game of the High Desert Classic. Tomas Brock had 17 points while freshman Zach Kleine had a career-high 11.

SBU held a narrow lead at various points through the game; Jacob French's fast-break layup gave the Bearcats a 23-22 lead with 9:26 left in the first half. St. Mary's tied the game with a free throw, before Brock hit his only three pointer of the game to regain the lead. Later in the half, St. Mary's went on a 8-4 run to close out the half and take a 41-38.

Midway through the second half, Lane Barlow gave the Bearcats their biggest lead of the night, hitting a three, giving SBU a 70-67 lead. The Rattlers quickly answered, and built a nine-point lead throughout the second half.

The Bearcats shot 47.5% from the field, including 37.8% from three, improving from last night's 28.4% and 25.5%. While the 'Cats had fewer turnovers (12) than in the season opener (17), they also had 12 less rebounds. SBU was also outscored in the paint for the second straight game, 44-24.

SBU falls to 0-2 on the year, while St. Mary's improves to 1-1 after their loss to Central Missouri in the first game of the Classic. The Bearcats will be back in action this Thursday, November 18, as they travel down the road to Rolla, to take on Missouri S&T. Tipoff against the Miners is set for 7:30 p.m.
