Southwest Baptist University Adding STUNT As a Sport in 2018-19

3/8/2018 2:00:00 PM

Bolivar, Mo. - Southwest Baptist University Bearcats will add STUNT as a sport for the 2018-19 season, according to Director of Athletics, Mike Pitts.

STUNT is among the fastest growing female sports in the nation. A STUNT competition consists of 24 routines that teams learn, which feature partner stunts, pyramids, basket tosses, jumps, tumbling, and team routines. Sixteen athletes are able to compete at a single match, and the roster can be as many as 36.

SBU's program will be led by their current cheer coach, Kayla Duffey. Duffey states: "I am excited for the opportunity to partake in this new and growing sport. Adding a STUNT program opens up many opportunities for female athletes to compete on a collegiate level and be recognized not only as a team but as individuals based on their athletic abilities. I believe by adding a STUNT program that SBU will see an increase of female student athletes and bring in a new and excited fan base dedicated to the sport."

"STUNT is a fantastic opportunity for the Bearcats," said Pitts. "It will give many more student-athletes in our area a great opportunity to experience what SBU is all about. You will still see our Cheer Team at our football and basketball games. But now they will have an opportunity to join and compete with other incoming student-athletes in STUNT events. It will be exciting to watch our STUNT program compete and grow!"

Prospective student-athletes interested in competing for a scholarship and a chance to be on Southwest Baptist University's STUNT team should contact head coach Kayla Duffey at kduffey@sbuniv.edu.
