Corie Chuning continued her strong indoor season in day one of the MSSU Lion Open, hitting another provisional qualifying national mark in the 60 meter dash pre-lims, tying her own school record, in 7.72 seconds. The Bearcats had four runners qualify for finals and 8 top five finishes in the opening day.
Emma Shell took 2nd place in the 200 meter dash, missing a provisional mark by only .06 seconds, and posting the 2nd fastest time in SBU history with a 25.56. Shell also qualified for finals in the 60 meter dash, posting the seventh fastest time in the meet at 8.02 seconds. After Chuning's impressive performance in the 60 meter dash pre-lims, she finished in 3rd place in the 200 meter dash in a time of 25.65.
On the men's sprint side, Deneko Brown continues his impressive sophomore campaign by qualifying for finals in the 60 meter dash in a time of 6.96 seconds, only .01 seconds away from a national provisional qualifying mark. Brown's time moves him up to fourth on the all-time list. Brown also ran the 200 meter dash, finishing 5th in a time of 22.55. Dylan Barnum also qualified for finals in the 60 meter hurdles, finishing the pre-lim race in a time of 8.58 seconds.
On the women's distance side,
Melanie McVay had an impressive showing in the 3,000 meter run. McVay took 2nd place in a time of 10:22.03, ranking her second all-time on the SBU performance list.
Krenda McClure took 5th place in the same event in a time of 10:38.04, ranking her fifth all-time at SBU. On the men's side, Phillip Miller also placed 2nd in the 3,000 meter run in a time of 8:39.74, ranking him fourth all-time in SBU history.
The Bearcats will be back in action tomorrow when they conclude the MSSU Lion Open from Joplin, Missouri.
