SBU sweeps MIAA cross country weekly honors

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Southwest Baptist’s Crissie Owensby and Phillip Miller have been named MIAA Cross Country Student-Athletes of the Week for the week of Sept. 4 as selected by a conference SID panel.
MIAA WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY RUNNER OF THE WEEK

Owensby, a sophomore from Raytown, Mo., won the 5k Bearcat Invitational Friday evening, placing first (19:33.54) by nearly eight seconds over Missouri State’s Maggie Sutor (19:41.50). Owensby was one of five SBU runners in the top seven -- Melanie McVay, Ashley Wolkomir, Holly Hackney, Melody Elswick finished fourth through seventh respectively. Owensby overtook a pair of MSU runners for the win in SBU’s first home regular season meet since 2004.

The sophomore from Lee’s Summit, Mo., opened his second season as a Bearcat by winning the 2010 SBU Bearcat Invitational by 11 seconds over Missouri S&T’s David Huskisson (15:58.67). The two runners battled for first for a good portion of the race before Miller pulled away at the end. The Bearcats had four runners in the top seven (Miller, Max McClure, Ethan Knox, Josh Inman) to take the event with 28 points to 36 for Missouri S&T. It was SBU’s first home regular season meet since 2004.
