LAKELAND, Fla. -- The Bearcats earned a tough comeback win against the Falcons of Montevallo in the season opening match at the Florida Southern Classic, before falling three games to one to host Florida Southern. The 'Cats started out down two games to Montevallo before taking the final three games, each by thin margins of 28-26, 25-22, and 15-13. Junior Ashley Jurgensmeyer led the 'Cats with 24 kills in the first match.
After Montevallo took the first game, 25-17, the Bearcats controlled most of the second, taking the lead at 3-2 after a Falcon attack error. Montevallo was on the ropes after Jenna Isaacs's kill to make it a 21-18 Bearcat lead, but the Falcons were able to make a 7-2 run and complete the comeback.
SBU looked in trouble in the third game, down 7-12 early, but a series of Falcon errors opened the door for the 'Cats to get back in the game. SBU tied the set at 15 and never gave up the lead, although Montevallo would force a tie at 23, and would not go away until the Bearcats got their 28th and final point off of a kill from senior Joanna Granzow. Jurgensmeyer finished out the game with 8 kills, while Alyx Glover recorded 11 digs, the highest game totals for either side.
The fourth set went back and forth, with both teams claiming the lead early. Montevallo got out to a 20-15 lead, the largest of the game on either side, but after a Falcon attack error and a kill from Brianna Wallace, the Bearcats closed out the game with a 10-2 run.
Montevallo took a brief lead in the middle of the fifth set, but couldn't hang on for long, and after another pair of errors from the Falcons, SBU took a 14-13 lead, and Reed closed out the match with her 14th kill of the game.
In the second game, Florida Southern jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead, winning 25-8 and 25-15. The 'Cats took the third game, 25-17, but never found their rhythm in the fourth set. After six straight points for Florida Southern changed the score from 14-12 to 20-12, the Bearcats were unable to pull even and fell 25-16.
Reed recorded a double-double in her first game, with 14 kills and 17 digs. Wallace led the way with 75 assists; 49 against Montevallo and 26 in the Florida Southern match. Jurgensmeyer had a team-high eight kills between the two matches.
SBU starts off the season 1-1, with two more games in the Florida Southern Classic. The 'Cats take on Angelo State and Missouri S&T on Saturday, September 4. The first match starts at 10 a.m., while the closing match of the tournament is scheduled for 2 p.m.
