BOLIVAR, Mo. -- Working toward a repeat of last season's NCAA nationals appearance, the SBU Bearcats took first in the Bearcat Invitational, held on the SBU campus. Sophomore
Phillip Miller took the individual title, coming in first with a time of 15:47. David Huskisson, of Missouri S&T came in second, over 11 seconds behind.
The Bearcats defeated the Miners, by a score of 28 to 36. Drury came in third with 75 points, while Coffeyville CC finished fourth with 123 points, tied with a team of SBU cross country alumni.
Miller took an early lead and slowly built the interval to second place up throughout the 5K course. Sophomore
Max McClure finished in fourth position with a time of 16:12.
Ethan Knox and
Josh Inman finished sixth and seventh, respectively, giving the Bearcats four runners in the top seven. Missouri S&T had eleven runners cross the finish line before seeing their fourth, while Drury's number four came in 22nd.
Derek Lee (16:38) and
Justin Baker (16:47) finished with sub-17 times, coming in 12th and 15th, respectively.
Caleb Loya just missed that mark, coming in at 17:05, in 27th position.
With the win, the 'Cats will now prepare for the UCM Mule Run, held next Friday, September 10. SBU competed in last year's Mule Run, finishing second out of 12 teams, where the host Central Missouri took the title.
