BOLIVAR, Mo. -- The #32 SBU Bearcats took nine of nine matches against the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith on the men's side, while the SBU women fell, 9-0. The win improves the men's winning streak to seven matches, and keeps a perfect record at home intact. The 9-0 win marks the fifth match of the season the Bearcats have swept their opponent.
Marton Zsiga won his sixth straight singles match, improving his record to 15-4 on the year. Zsiga defeated Fort Smith's Lubos Sobotka in straight sets, 6-0, 6-2, after pairing up with
Domingos Carissimo to take the first doubles match against Sobotka and Brandon Underwood, 8-5.
Carissimo defeated Matheus da Silva, 6-4, 6-2, for his ninth consecutive singles win. Jorge Margiotta and Jorge Palacios each won their singles matches as well, each going the full three sets. Margiotta battled back after losing the first set to take the third tie-breaking set 7-5. Palacios took his third set by a 10-6 score.
On the women's side, the Bearcats dropped all three doubles matches by scores of 8-3. Faiga Schmidt lost a hard-fought match to Fort Smith's Abby Whittemore, dropping the first set 6-4 before battling back to take a close second set, 7-6. Whittemore was able to close out the match with a 8-6 third set.
The men are back in action on Tuesday, April 20, when they host Drury in a match scheduled for 4 pm. The women's team travels to Tahlequah, Okla., for a tournament hosted by Northeastern State on Friday-Saturday, April 16-17. Along with Northeastern, the women will face Cameron and Southeastern Oklahoma State.
